Aurora 7

Model Descrption

This model shows what Scott Carpenter’s Aurora 7 spacecraft would have looked like in space back in May of 1962.

Carpenter deployed a balloon on a tether, part of an atmospheric drag experiment which was tried on MA 7 and MA 9 involving a balloon towed behind the capsule. It was deployed on the second orbit and trailed behind on a 100 foot nylon rope. It traveled much more slowly then predicted and looped around itself. Within 15 minutes, its motion was random in pitch and yaw. You can reference this in Gordon Cooper’s book, ”Leap of Faith” or the archives of MA 7 .

This model features the 1/48 Mercury capsule in-flight configuration, about 2 1/2 inches long, over an airbrushed base with commemorative logo.
