Proach Models Builds 4 Orion Models for NASA Space Centers
At Proach Models, we love working for all of my incredible customers… but I have to say, when NASA calls to ask us to take on a job, it’s a huge honour.
Back in 2007, I did a one-day show at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. While there I got talking with a NASA rep who showed a lot of interest in my model spacecraft. One thing led to another and she ended up asking me to bid on a project to make two models of the Orion multipurpose crew vehicle for the Glenn Research Center and another NASA Center in Florida.
Needless to say, the idea of building a model of what is likely to become NASA’s next primary manned space vehicle had huge appeal, so I was thrilled when we won the contract. Proach Models made two Orion models – one at 1/24 scale and another at 1/14 scale.
In late 2008, we were awarded a contract from the Kennedy Space Centre to build two Orion MPCVs. While we were making those we decided to made a third one which we sold to a museum in Germany in 2012.
Word is NASA is planning to do a test flight of the Orion multipurpose crew vehicle in 2014, launching it atop a Delta IV Heavy Launch Vehicle in order to simulate a lunar return to test the heat shields. It should be very exciting to see what this new era of manned space exploration holds for us!
