Proach Models Celebrates 50 Years of Manned Spaceflight in 2011

HR MacMillan Space Center

To celebrate 50 years of manned space flight, in 2011 we joined with Vancouver BC’s HR MacMillan Space Center to stage an expansive exhibit that featured every spacecraft ever flown by a human, from Yuri Gagarin’s initial flight in the Russian spacecraft Vostok right through to modern day.

We covered the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs, putting particular focus on the Apollo 15 launch which was celebrating its 40th anniversary that year (which commemorated the 40th anniversary of my first professional space model!) We also featured models of all the Russian manned spacecraft that have flown through the years as well.

Looking at all those models and remembering all of those historic achievements in manned space flight was a humbling experience for me. It just goes to show you how much we can accomplish when we set a nearly impossible goal for ourselves and then let nothing stand in the way of achieving it.

I hope the current generation draws inspiration from the accomplishments of the manned space flight program as we move forward into the future.
